About The Conference

The Bible is controversial.  To the believer, this should be unsurprising because Jesus Christ came to change the world, challenging sin, tradition, and behavior.  And the Bible, the Word of God, plays a prominent role in bringing about God-driven transformation.  But is the Bible a blessing or a burden?  Where does the Bible even come from and how was it created? How does Biblical misuse impact Christ’s revolutionary aim? Understanding the answers to these questions is foundational to every believer and Being The Church. These questions and more will be explored by nationally renowned Biblical scholars at this year’s Being The Church One-Day Conference.

CONFERENCE SPEAKERS

Biblical Construction

Reverend Jeremy Williams, Ph.D.

Have you ever wondered where the Bible comes from or how the Bible was created?  What perspectives were included, omitted or ignored, and why?  How might the construction of the Bible inform or impact the believer’s faith walk?  Dr. Jeremy Williams will help us to grapple with these questions, while also providing insight and guidance on how grasping biblical construction is interrelated to growing in faith and Being The Church.

Biblical Relevance and Application (Old Testament)

Reverend Kimberly Russaw, Ph.D.

Depending on a variety of factors, including faith tradition, theology, upbringing, and preference, Old Testament scripture can be viewed as historical and antiquated, with little to no contemporary application.  Dr. Kimberly Russaw will lecture on the importance of the Old Testament for today’s world, highlighting and elaborating on why this ancient text remains highly relevant and applicable to the life of the believer and church.

Speaker's Bio

Biblical Relevance and Application (New Testament)

Reverend Raquel Lettsome, Ph.D.

The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is captured in the New Testament.  Though the Historical Jesus lived over two thousand years ago, does His model still remain the prime example for Christian living? Do New Testament teachings have impactful value today?  Through survey and assessment, Dr. Raquel Lettsome will provide practical insight and instruction on the ongoing significance of New Testament Scripture and its personal and corporate applicability in these contemporary times.

The Bible -- Warning: Misuse Can Cause Injury

Reverend Allen Callahan, Ph.D.

The controversial nature of the Bible is based not only on its use, but also its misuse.  History demonstrates a litany of instances, public and private, where the Bible’s misinterpretation and misuse has led to harmful theology, ideology, and organizational positions, and misinformed personal piety.  Dr. Allen Dwight Callahan will delve into biblical interpretation and misuse to aid the believer and the church to steer clear of the misapplication of the Bible in our personal and public witness.
